Default Minority applicants, persons with criminal history, and persons living with HIV

I'm looking at job positions and I run across one that looks interesting and then I'm reading through and I see this:

Minority applicants, persons with criminal history, and persons living with HIV are encouraged to apply.

I'm not offended or anything but this does strike me as a little odd although I'm not sure why. I think that it's because of the lumping of "minority applicants" with "persons with criminal history and persons living with HIV" together or like it's some list of undesirables that need a break. Is this weird to anyone else or is it just me?

Well, I suppose that people don't frequently like to hire people with criminal histories and HIV, but I really don't see why on earth minorities would get thrown into the mix. Why should anyone not want to hire a minority?

I don't think I've ever seen advertising for those with criminal history. Is it migrant farm labor?

Yeah, I'm totally considering quitting my cushy, if mindnumbing office job for the exciting career of a farm laborer! The 98% pay cut has got to be the most appealing part!

i dont think the intent was to lump those together, but to proactively encourage people in that list to apply if they thought they were at a disadvantage for those reasons.

it is a lot like saying "it's okay that you're XYZ", the person in reference might take offense because it implies that the validity of the contrary is possible enough to warrant affirmation. however, most of the time, this is usually caused by the "offender" making an [inaccurate] projection of discrimination onto the "offended", and thus intention is to remove that out of consideration... which is pretty harmless, in my opinion.

Don't employers get tax credits when they hire people from those groups?
