Much truth in this thread. To what's been posted so far I will add:
-If you are not in an embarrassing situation or remembering an embarrassing situation, you are imagining that you are causing an embarrassing situation in the present and get embarrassed in advance of it happening even though it is unlikely.
-You enjoy theorizing, and unlike the INTP a lack of facts does not hold you back.
-You noticed that "lack" and "back" rhyme and you immediately try to think of a melody and chorus.
-You started typing here several hours ago, opened up the smiley menu because you thought it would be cool to have a different smiley for each item you were goi
-You were typing the above half an hour ago but then had to run to the store for pretzels and dip because you found yourself in a sudden mood for pretzels and dip. (That dilly dip that has just that hint of dill and some onion but not too much.)
-Sorry, just got back from another browser window. Where was I?
-You like this icon for 23 minutes a day: :party2: and this icon for the other 23 hours 37 minutes of the day: :peepwall:
-You're never went to the store to get those pretzels and you're thinking about how you never meet anyone at the store even though people say all the time "hey why not try meeting someone at the store" even though you've never met anyone at the store, you've never seen anyone meet anyone else at the store, you've never heard of or met anyone who's heard of meeting anyone at the store, and now you spiral downward into a deep pondering session where you wonder if there is anyone else out there who might be shopping for pretzels on a Saturday night...
-Portishead is like that "Zip-ah-Dee-Doo-Dah" song for you but with crows instead of bluebirds... If you're INFP and haven't experienced the luxurious auditory despair of Portishead listen now! Especially "The Rip" from Third. Go right now to their Myspace page and check out the video: MySpace.com - Portishead - BRISTOL, UK - Other / Experimental / Psychedelic - www.myspace.com/portisheadalbum3 (http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendid=48489150) Beth Gibbons = :wubbie:
Also, fittingly the intro to Third in Portuguese translates to: "Beware to the rule of three. What you give comes back to you. You should learn this lesson. You only receive what you deserve." Very INFP
Also, have a heaping helping of Radiohead's "In Rainbows" every day. It is chicken soup for the INFP soul.
-If you try to get everyone to listen to the bands you like because you feel that then all of humanity could transcend to a higher level, but unfortunately they keep listening to Britney Spears...
-If you could communicate everything you need to in your daily life by quoting song lyrics from your several hundred favorite album whose songs you know by heart...
-You were working on a document several hours ago that you still have open in another window to come here to type this post, then put off finishing typing this post to view/listen to Internet videos that you found while searching for Portishead clips, leading to numerous layers of procrastination...
-"magical" things makes you sneeze (I once sneezed 30 times while really deeply listening to the glorious majesty that is Paranoid Android for example...) I guess this goes overall with having a strong physical reaction to emotions...
-you realize it was three hours ago now the pretzel idea first struck you, you realize you haven't eaten dinner yet either, and suddenly fear strikes your heart for you wonder if you left something on the stove.
-now you're back after a quarter hour from catching the end of a show downstairs after checking to make sure nothing was melting from the stovetop
-you don't get embarrassed when watching a movie and people are making out on-screen but you have to cover your eyes or go hide during certain parts of "Sleepless in Seattle"
-even though you have a high-end computer with a blazing fast processor, tons of memory, and a stable OS installation, you can easily crash your rig through the sheer number of browser windows you open while exploring the web and then never close them nor get back to them on your trek forward into new things...

It's funny - I've never thought of a detective as being that aware of contingencies, but I guess they would have to be pretty good at that. I was thinking instead Machiavelli skilz, when you mentioned awareness of contingencies, but the goals would often be very different.
However when Machiavelli said "There is nothing more difficult to carry out, nor more doubtful of success, nor more dangerous to handle, than to initiate a new order of things. For the reformer has enemies in all those who profit by the older order, and only lukewarm defenders in all those who would profit by the new order, this lukewarmness arising partly from fear of their adversaries, who have the laws in their favour; and partly from the incredulity of mankind, who do not truly believe in anything new until they have had actual experience of it." M is explaining one of the very things that INFP's have the hardest time comprehending; at least to the extent that they have reached the point of living it, versus simply intellectually conceding it.

I see what you're saying. I generally start out with people on one level, and I may or may not ever have to be ( or even want to be ) very assertive with them, as time goes along. But if they start striking me as someone who's consistently trying to "get over" on me, I can go well beyond assertiveness with them, and become quite aggressive, albeit however obliquely the situation may require.......

As an ENFP who is about 3-5% E, I think John Lennon (my fav INFP, well fav famous one :)) describes it well with 'watching the wheels'. (i transcribed off an old version not the album one)
People say I'm crazy
to do what I'm doing.
They give me all kinds of advice
to save me from ruin.
When I say that I'm okay
they look at me kinda strange,
"but surely you're not happy now
you're no longer in the game."
People say I'm lazy,
wasting my life away.
They give me all kinds of warnings
designed to enlighten me.
I tell them I'm doing fine
watching shadows on the wall,
"but don't you miss the good times boy?
You're no longer on the ball."
I'm just sitting here watching the wheels go round.
I really love the traffic flow.
No longer riding on the merry-go-round..
I just got to let it go.
People say I'm stupid,
giving my money away.
They give me all kinds of names and addresses,
designed to save me financially.
I tell them I'm just doing fine watching the flowers grow,
"but surely you're not happy boy, you don't own the whole damn world."
I'm just sitting here watching the world go round...
I really love to watch it spin.
No longer riding on the merry-go-round..
I just had to do it in.

Hey, my thoughts exactly. I'm not exactly unhappy with being my type, though, but I get the point. Maybe being seen as emotionally sensitive is a romantic ideal these days...which in some respects isn't a bad thing, but why so focused on the negative side of things.
I dunno, teenagers and young adults, always seem to embrace what is seen rebelling, and some times contrary to societies values and desires. It's a good thing really.

I agree! Im pretty emotionally sensitive but I think I tend to focus on positive emotions because I would prefer to feel happy as opposed to feeling sad. I think people think that because focused on sadness and negative emotions is the romantic ideal? dunno

I don't think it is necessarily a good thing. Knee-jerk rebelling, to be rebel for the sheer sake of rebelling, mindlessly, seems as bad or worse than conforming for conformity's sake.
It means being totally controlled by that which one rebels against instead of being an indepedent, free-thinker.

Quite, that's why I never acted like that in my teens. Other people's opinions never really mattered enough to me for me to be so afraid of the hold they might have over me. I think that sort of rebellious mindset comes from a fear almost of engulfment, of being so overwhelmed by another person's thoughts and feelings that the only defense is to be radically different to them in every respect. I suppose someone with a secure sense of self in the first place doesn't need to go to such lengths.
It's funny how much teenage rebels often end up resembling their parents once they reach middle age...

Is that an INFP trait? Cool. Cos I'm only 5% E and I need artistic release when I'm alone. It's something I can't do without.

Hmm...sorry for my belated reply.
My point about being all emo, and rebelling in this way seeming like a good thing is sometimes people remember the idealist state they were trying to achieve, and retain a certain affection for it, and even respect. I do reliese this isn't always the case, I'd be willing to compromise for acceptance....which often happens when a generation choses a rebel persona. Examples in case, the James Dean persona, the 1960's hippie etc. They often get villified at the height of popularity, and then get integrated into the general land scape, and often the next generation, or even the next one admires the ideals behind it, and you have a revival. What's not to love, tortured artist souls, desperate to express themselves but feel suppressed, disconnected, and misunderstood. I missed out by about ten years, I'd have made a great emo kid.http://i63.photobucket.com/albums/h146/adenosine28/emo.jpg

You refuse to admit that some people are truly evil, despite having every contrary evidence infront of you.
When your sitting in a park filled with flowers, you suddenly start crying as a rowdy SP drunkard tramples on few, an incident which you interperate as symbolic and metaphorical in nature.

Hehe, interpreting symbolism is an S thing. For us there is nothing symbolic or metaphoric about it. It's the needless destruction and ending of something beautiful and artistic, that could've stayed that way.
I don't know about INFPs, they might be more attached, but my empathy for flowers isn't that high, there'd just be a cringe in the back of my mind each time you crushed one.
Also on another level I would find a drunkard in the flowers quite amusing because of my love of anarchy. And maybe join them or go talk to them if it looked fun.
How do you INFPs differ from ENFP on this?
(You're right on the evil part. We more have to class them in an unfixably troubled category.)

I do this one too. I just see something that no one else even thinks is funny in the class and get set off. Like one time they had graphs of psychopath's reactions to different stimuli and most were scared of the neutral stimulus. The lecturer didn't even highlight it, was just focussed on them not reacting to the bad stimulus. I was just having visions of psychos running away from books or trees.

I had that when I was younger. I used to be the same with stuffed toys. Had to find them all and tuck them in before bed, and if one had fallen down the side of the bed or was missing, it was tragedy and a rescue operation was needed before sleep.

"Having decided that someone is an utterly obnoxious asshole, you start thinking of ways you can help them become a nicer person."
there were so many things I related to in this thread but this one made me laugh out loud. i not only think of ways to help them become nicer, but immediately begin making overtures toward the person, talking them up to others and berating myself for ever being so shortsighted.
some others:
you know you are an infp when you avoid a scheduled responsibility in favor of commissioning satirical cartoons that passive-aggressively express your boredom and frustration with the mundane and...anything else you don't like.
when you come into work late only to stay late and come in on the weekends just to assure yourself you are not on anyone elses timetable.
when you fill out bureaucratic forms in the opposite order or answer simple, straightforward questions with a deflecting joke or an absurd invention.
when you rescue animals while spacing out on the ones you already have.
when you christmas shop with your bill money.
when you respond to compliments with embarrassment or skepticism (I wonder why they said that??)
when you feel more comfortable with strangers than with your intimate others.
when you overanalyze to the point where you have to go to sleep in order to shut your mind up.

You have some artistic outlet
You forget to eat or go to the bathroom until you're about to explode
You get lost in your own neighborhood.
You read in public
Deciding on a career is difficult because you have so many interests
You're so capable of responsability yet you hate having it pushed on you.
You are always searching for answers or ways to improve yourself.
Mistake yourself as INTJ,INFJ,ISTJ,ENFJ, and get home from Neptune in time for dinner
Disappear alot/in conversations and physically
You induldge in the dark thoughts like others do chocolate
You know you're an INFP when you can't bring yourself to get rid of that old blanket because you're afraid you'll hurt its feelings.
...when you find yourself to be obsessed over "darkness" and suffering only because you are so in love with the "light".

- you can remember conversations from years ago, but can't remember to clean your room.
- your INTJ friend takes the time to mock you then discovers that he is also very similar, hence the laughing stops.
- if you are more interested in personality types than others.
- you get so lost in your thoughts you don't realize an hour has passed.
- you want life to be great, but can't get passed not having your ideals met.
