Whose better? I would have to go with The Clash, on the count of them being more musical and more substance over style than The Ramones. Also, The Clash had Joe Strummer. The Ramones can also get a little mundane to me.

No contest, but they're all great. The Ramones and the Sex Pistols have about 1/4 the great material of The Clash. The Ramones took longer to come up with the same amount as the Pistols though.

I'd also add that when it came to style, which is obviously a large part of punk, The Sex Pistols might reign supreme, and more charismatic, which they had to be on the count that they couldn't play their instruments.

None of the above could really play well.

True, but I'd argue that The Clash could play 10x better than the Pistols.

Well...Maybe later, they could. Probably not in 1976.

Probably not in the very beginning. They were opening for the Pistols then, who were around a few years before them.

Yeah, if you compare the early versions of the bands, they're both very punk. The Clash evolved, the Pistols broke up in a year.

Falcarius is not really a punk fan but The Clash.
The Pogues and The Sex Pistols make his ears hurt.

I don't enjoy listening to any of them, so it would be very difficult for me to gauge. Haven't paid much attention. I have paid just enough attention to tell that, regardless of whose best, the Sex Pistols are the worst on that list.

For the people who don't normally enjoy any of these bands, you might like The Pogues - Summer In Siam

Damn, this is a tough one. The Ramones were there at the beginning, and I dig the vibe a lot. The Clash were by far the best of those bands when it comes to the music. The Sex Pistols were the definitive punk band, and their musicianship is underrated (there were some cool post-Pistols projects). I'll go with The Clash by a hair, although I put Never Mind the Bollocks Here's the Sex Pistols just two albums ahead of London Calling on my All-Time list.

For no good reason, The Ramones. I just get happy when they're playing.

I find it strange The Clash got so much exposure in the states, compared to the relative obscurity of The Jam's stateside career.
For you Lady Jaye.

I think it may have been their love of American blues and early rock musicians. There was a greaser, Stray Cats-esque sort of thing going on in the US at the time, and I think that made the Clash appealing.
For you Lady Jaye.

This is one of my favorite movie music moments.
Billy Elliot - A Town Called Malice
Fun fact: "A Town Called Malice" is the #1 Most Played Song of All Time on my Winamp.

the clash are fucking great
the pistols had wonderful lyrics. i kind of like johnny rotten, not much the band per se (but I don't like him with PIL so...uhm )
the ramones are more like party music for me. I don't even own a record, I respect what they did for music history but they don't connect that much with me. But if they play them I can't stay still or not sing. it's a physical impossibility for me. like with r&b or soul music. I'm not exactly a fan of that type of music, but it gets me moving. :D
oh and I like the adverts. and x-ray spex. :)

The Clash. Total no-contest.
Also, I LOVE that scene from Billy Elliot. I have it on DVD, and I used to watch that scene whenever I felt especially depressed. It is so awesome. I used to sprint just because whenever "A Town Called Malice" came on my iPod. I also love the scene where he auditions for the Royal Ballet School and describes what it feels like when he's dancing. Sigh. Love that movie.

The Clash seem more "musically talented" and, for that very reason ( able to display complexity, among other things ) less "punk" - which would be the Ramones.
I remember when Iggy Pop started a lot of this "rock as attitude" - probably himself inspired by Jim Morrison and Jagger, as far as his onstage antics.
I can't seem to get this youtube mechanism to work. Will post these links instead.

RIGHT! Listen to The Story of the Clash. So much variety.
The band was so much more musically adventurous than the other three.
Joe Strummer and Mick Jones, Jagger and Richards, some songwriters just work so well together. :headphne:

The clash are better musicians but I voted Ramones because I like to listen to them better.
