Which types do you believe would enjoy philosophy?

INFx, INTx. We have different approaches, however.

The Ideal INTP approach to philosophy (I say so without qualification since it is mine ;)) is to analyze life, decide on a personal philosophy, and live by it. Post-decision input becomes irrelevant, for the most part.

INTP as the analyst machine, the Ni's, INTJ and INFJ, INFPs are constantly scrutinizing their own philosophy it seems, though in a more personal manner than the INTP counterpart. ENFPs could be fantastic philosophers because of the attention they pay to others' behavior (Ne Fi) forces them through Te (with Si) to scrutinize themselves against the patterns they percieve in others, so a strong natural philosophy will develop, and they will constantly check and re-check to make sure the philosophy they embody is "right." Which it never will be. Their downfall would be that most of them are not naturally drawn to study large amounts of philosophy and would be content just changing themselves instead. I enjoy philosophy personally, and I believe ENFPs have the tools for this kind of analysis. Though my bias is enormous. Intuition may be very important to connect ideas in a manner conducive to abstract analysis, so it would seem to me that not a single 'S' type has a leg up on any of the 'N' types. INTJs and INTPs really take the cake though if you think about it, I would guess 80% minimum of our best philosophers fall into one camp or the other

Dang, I used to have an actual type chart from the CAPT: Training, Books, Research for MBTI, Archetypes, Leadership, Psychological Type. (http://www.capt.org) database. Philosophy professors are mostly NT, mostly INT, as I recall. Yes some INFs dabble in it but so much of the formal discipline deals with logic...

edit: But some types such as ISTJ could really get a lot of philosophy done. If this was a question of who could create the most sound philosophy, or write the best philosophy, my answer would have been very different and I would have had very little emphasis on the ENFP type. But the question was open-ended.

My "philosophy" (LOL) is that ENFPs lack the objectivity necessary to analyze life for what it really is.

all the N types basically. but with different approaches and goals.

NT's would probably be more systematic, and good at theoretical philosophy, while NF's would be less systematic, more into ethics and maybe aestethics.

understanding what life "really" is, is pretty hard to define anyway. or at least to reduce to objectivity.

For everyone but INTPs, it is. I pity you all. (LOL, but I'm not kidding in the least.)

I would say mainly introverted intuitives. Extraverted intuitives tend to be less reflective and obsessed with the theoretical.

In my experience, INTPs tend to be the most obsessed with philosophy (all aspects). Also, personally, every INTJ I know has at least some background in it, but either lost interest or didn't care much for it because its highly theoretical nature had limited applicability.

I also observed that INFPs and INFJs tend to be more interested in the spiritual/theological/ethics sides of philosophy. Which makes sense.

Only NTs like philosophy. Except ENTJs. They're too busy aggrandizing wall street to philosophize properly.

All other types hate it. A lot.

ENFPs are better at having fun. INTPs are better at objective analysis. Any questions?

Why should great philosophy equal objective analysis? Metareflection is your friend.

When you "force it so," it reeks of Anti-Philosophical tendencies.

"Anti-philosophy is talking aloud about it: philosophy is dead!"

Surely you can appreciate the irony too.

We should talk about the last wordiness of contradiction.

Okay...I see that the argument has swerved a little from philosophy to kindergarten games...

First of all, the NT types are NOT the only ones who enjoy philosophy, I gobbled it up in high school!!!

And as to the ENFPs only being concerned with having fun...try explaning my 4.0 gpa then... :rolli:

My "philosophy" (LOL) is that ENFPs lack the objectivity necessary to analyze life for what it really is.

I don't think I used the word "philosophy" in place of the word "opinion," like your mocking remark would imply. I was using a sort of secondary definition of the term that I think fits fairly well: "a philosophical attitude, as one of composure and calm in the presence of troubles or annoyances."

But that's neither here nor there- would you please tell me what life really is?

I'm so disillusioned. Here I was, thinking I was capable of analyzing life, but now I see that I and the other 300,000,000 of my type lack this ability. Absurd.

I think most N types would enjoy philosophy...INTP's are just the only ones stupid enough to pursue it as a career.

 this reminds me of a person I disliked.hm...ok it's gone now.
Philosophy is pretty interesting so far, I started my first classes. but I have a feeling I still don't understand it too much.

It's obvious to me that it helps to at least be introverted to be philosophical. Extroverts are better at doing stuff than thinking about it.

I think it's an N thing. I know Ns of all type that are into philosophy. In fact, I'd say the INTJs I know are the least into philosophy of all the N types I know. I doubt this is a general trend, though.

I study philosophy at uni, and I'd say that the majority of people studying it are introverts. My philosophy modules are the one's in which I am most conscious of people who stand out for their introversion, so I think it also contains a lot of polar introverts; people who are totally content by themselves and seem fairly introspective and caught up in their own thoughts a lot of the time. My class is also predominantly N's, which is to be expected I suppose. In terms of T/F, I'd say mostly T, but a few of us are F's. It's actually difficult in an academic context to determine T/F; I'm sure some people in my class would presume I was a T, I know in the past people have thought that when they've only seen me in discussions. As for J/P.. hmmm, probably mostly P's, although interestingly the J's we have are J squared.

I think INTP's are the type who would view philosophy most favourably; they're reflective, ideas orientated, and a P so prepared to engage with a variety of ideas. It's funny, although INTJ's definitely demonstrate some interest in philosophy, I see very few of them who love it; my younger (INTJ) brother told me he'd find my course infuriating, since so many of the ideas are just *wrong* (wry smile). I actually think a lot of the philosophy I study is totally illogical and nonsensical, and various philosophers contradict eachother etc. so of course you will be exposed to ideas in the discipline which you disagree with. I derive enjoyment from discussing ideas I think are rubbish though, whereas J types might be inclined to see it as a waste of time, or, in actual fact, irritating.

Oh-h! My bad! I thought that the word important was implied in the philosophy question... ;)

Then again, who am I, an NF, to say this isn't the greatest strand of thought since...EVER!

I just know how to feel a lot...

And I feel a little confused...
