Had you asked me when I was in college if I preferred blondes, brunettes, or redheads, I would have been mildly offended. I would have told you that I don't have a preference, that I find things to like... no, love actually... about women of all hair and skin colors and body types. That was true then, and it is still true today.
However, looking back on my life and my relationships, I find that:
My longest high-school relationship was with a redhead.
My strongest high-school relationship was with a (different) redhead.
I married a redhead.
To this day I find that when I meet someone with whom I have good "chemistry," it's almost always a redhead.
The funny thing about this is that it's not a conscious choice. I still believe in egalitarian beauty. I still appreciate women with all different hair and skin colors, and body types.
However, whenever there's been a woman in my life who has made me weak in the knees, it's been a redhead. Something about that fair skin and freckles... for some reason, the ginger gene really pushes my buttons.
By way of disclosure, my paternal grandmother was a freckly redhead.
Does anyone else here experience "chemistry" of that sort?

I have an attraction to unique eyes...I love to look into everyone's eyes...but there's something about someone who has a unique color or a unique shape that really draws me.
It so happens that the 2 people I have been in a relationship with both had really great eyes though I honestly don't see this as a prerequisite but like you Oberon...It so happens that the nice eyes were there for both men...
It may be because one of my most prominent features are my eyes as well. I don't know...

It is pretty fascinating how many, if not most, men have a preference for either, blonds, brunettes or redheads. Every guy I have dated has admitted to having a preference for brunettes.
I often joke with my best friend that one of the reasons why she and I have gotten along so smoothly and consistently throughout our many years of friendship has been due to the fact that there is no sexual competition between us because we represent separate and distinct hair color niches, (she's a blond), and hence have rarely, if ever, had to worry about attracting the same males.

All the women bar one that I've been interested in have had unusual names.
Like you, Oberon, I might not consciously look for it, but it also might not be circumstantial.
Even my best friend had an unusual name.

Nice hips and some weight (not too much) seems to be what I end up with often. The rest seems to end up a mixed bag. Aparently there is an angle that a woman's femurs make when she's standing heel to heel and the triangle it makes with her illium that drives me crazy. The presence or lack of padding seems to be nearly irrelavant as long as that triangle has the right proportions.

I have also found myself attracted to all makes and models in men. However, the only two with whom I've sustained an over-one-year relationship have both been dark - black eyes, black hair, dark skin. One was Sicilian/Native American and the other was Pakistani.
And me? I'm a Nordic ice princess. Blue/green/grey eyes (think ocean on a cloudy day) and fish-belly white where the sun don't touch.
I too have been attracted to females of all sorts. BUT I love dark brown hair, normally on the longer side. Short/petite. Cute voice. Sweet/smart personality.
If you fit the bill, get at me. :)

I wouldn't call that "chemistry" so much as "physical attraction"...but then again, I suppose we're all made of chemicals, so.....nevermind. :D
Yes, of course. I, too, have an obsession with redheads, though with that I have an inexplicable dislike of blondes and an obsession with green eyes. I'm not sure where these preferences came from, but I do know that they were there from a very early age (must have been 4 or 5 years old) because I loved my Midge doll (she had beautiful auburn hair and green eyes) and disliked my Barbie doll (you know, the typical blonde/blue eyes one).
I've relaxed a bit with the redhead obsession, since there doesn't seem to be a dearth of attractive redheads around, but I still find that a pair of green eyes make ANYONE look attractive to me (even blondes).
I also have a dislike of black (or really dark brown) eyes that made me wonder if I was racist for a while until I saw a hot redhead with them and realized that I didn't like them on his face, either. Hmm...
Oh, and another weird thing... my maternal grandmother had red hair and green eyes, and my paternal grandmother has black eyes and brunette hair.

What we find attractive is of course often absurd and out of our control, so I'll say I think I prefer artificial blonde to natural blonde, including the dark eyebrows that go along with it. Funny, huh.

i think there's a connection here with the dumb blonde myth. you get your stereotypical dumb blonde who loves shopping, gossip, being a cheerleader etc. i think a lot of guys who are attracted to brunettes are turned off by this dumb blonde stereotype and hence go for a brunette. this is mostly subconscious.
do i get similar cases of 'chemistry', yes, of course i do. i think everybody does, they're just a. in denial or b. unaware of it. i am chinese for example and i like asian chicks. nothing wrong with that is there?

I think what really surprised me is not that I have a preference, but that my preference appeared to be hard-wired. It's so organic it's outside cognition.
I only recognize that I prefer redheads because I can look back on my life and see it. My thinking mind doesn't consider redheads intrinsically more attractive than any other color or color combination.

By that metric, I prefer pretty guys with a slim build who are three to six inches (that's 8-15 cm for us non-imperialists) taller than me. I had a huge crush on Leonardo DiCaprio when I was 14 and Baz Luhrmann's Romeo and Juliet came out. Since then my taste has naturally progressed somewhat beyond that boyish ideal but I still don't respond to more rugged masculinity, as this test (http://www.typologycentral.com/forums/69175-post13.html) showed.

I have an inexplicable dislike of blondes
I have an image of what I think are the most beautiful features in a woman (wavy red hair, porcelain skin, big eyes, and lots of curves), but it really has nothing to do with real life, or with the women I date. It's like how if you ask someone what their dream job is, and they say "rock star". That's such a ridiculous job that you don't take it to mean that they're dissatisfied with their current job or even that they'd enjoy being a rock star once it happened.
Even though I say that what I described above is my type, the fantasy woman in your mind has no personality. She's just a collection of features. But in real life, you choose a woman because of the entirety of her. So the features you say are your type probably have no better than an average chance of showing up in a mate. This is why I think "what's your type?" is a curious question to ask someone when deciding whether to introduce them to an acquaintance. It's not likely to have much of a bearing on whether they hit it off.

I think it's got to do with the fact I'm petite myself, and I notice shorter guys because they're at eye level, that's my theory. and a little less logically, i usually am initially attracted to boys that not everyone else notices, rather than the more obviously physically attractive ones who get more attention from the rest of the room.
as for shy, i think it has to do with the sudden-ness of my realisation that there's a lot more to them under that shy persona when they say something surprisingly witty or incisive.
i think quiet confidence (which is also generally present in shorter guys comfortable with their bodies) drives me crazy, and makes me really interested to know how their minds work, because in groups i'm the girl who cannot quite hold back (though i've learnt to, more) when it comes to random topics that just prod my Ne, but still, calm - but not an intrinsic dullness - intrigues me.

But anyways, in truth, one of the things I look for most in a girl is whether or not she can go to an art museum and really look at the paintings, and then actually comment on them later. I've discovered how most of the "hot" girls aren't able to stop long enough to view the beauty around them, instead they just snap a picture and move on. Then if I try to talk to them about the artwork later, I end up staring at a little screen on a digital camera for the next fifteen minutes.
A true appreciation for art of all forms is just so beautiful. And if a girl has a beautiful voice and is able to create art, Hey, even better. And if she digs XKCD and changes her room into a ball pit, then it's a match made in heaven.
you know, that third criterion seems a little out of place for some reason.

There was this ENTP in my garage...
All women should be so lucky as to have an ENTP in their garage.
We won't clean it up much, but we'll build cool things out of your old lawn furniture, three worn-out basketballs, and your weed-eater.

If you like hips, you must like Kate Winslet.

I really think chemistry/attractiveness comes from within. I've many times had the experience of finding someone physicallly attractive initially but having that disappear once I got to know them. And vice versa: I've thought someone was only passably attractive at first but come to think he was the most handsome/sexy man in the world. I think there's a certain minimum amount of physical attractiveness that is necessary for me, but after that it's all personality/interpersonal chemistry.

Didn't I say that?

i think the topic is referring to behavioral chemistry, not physical
Yes, that is true...
*checks OP* Wasn't it about which physical or otherwise easily discernable attributes make you feel like you've been punched in the gut in a good way, e.g. redheads in Oberon's case? Which IMO is not easily distinguishable from a fetish thread. :D
... What kind of discussion did you have in mind, Oberon? :)

I understood it was a thread about subconscious physical chemistry. or subconscious readhead fetishes. they're very similar it would seem.

He stole my tools too. :steam: I would bully him away from his box and start pulling stuff out and making loud commentary about his kleptomania. He took this as foreplay of course, so my shamey-finger tirades didn't work the intended effect.
He was useful though. I can't complain. He could fix just about anything.
Weird. I had a dream about him last night. I must be feeling unsafe.

My theme is that, while I do not consciously prefer redheads for their redheadedness, after observing my 25 years of forming romantic relationships (including 19+ years of marriage) I see that I must prefer redheads at some level.
Because it is not a conscious preference, it must therefore be subconscious or unconscious. I find this most puzzling.

That makes sense. Not that I can impregnate anybody, but I find boyish hips on a girl unattractive.

I included my preference by the same rationale. It just didn't take me 25 years to make the inference. ;) :D

It means I'm totally unsurprised that you feel unsafe. You should feel unsafe. Your life is an insecure place. I wish there was a way to make it better, but I don't know of one. It makes me unhappy, which is strange because I don't really even know you.

I did an online test that involved viewing a set of images of female faces and choosing which I preferred. It turned out that I preferred blondes with heart shaped faces.

- my longest relationship was with a redneck
- I always fall in love with rednecks
- I am going to marry a redneck
Why do you actually call it "red head" ? "redhair" would be more accurate wouldn't it ? I mean red head is actually funny tho :D

Heehee, I have never seen a German redneck. I'm picturing Jeff Foxworthy in liederhosen.

I've always been into dark, broody, eccentric guys and now I'm dating a blonde, blue/green eyed, muscular, jock-type, prototype of the all-american male and though I've always been weirdly repelled by these types, I've grown to see him as absolutely adorable. It throws my universe off.
