I'm finally going to stop messing around with funky keysets and get a gaming mouse.
It's for MMO use almost exclusively, a little but of TF2, anyone have any recommendations?

I'd probably get a Logitech 518 if buying today (below). I have a G5, and it's nice.

The Logitech mx518 Jack Flak suggested is pretty solid. I got it because of the dpi-on-the-fly without the need for drivers (sweet!).The G5 & G7 are also good choices, if your willing to spend the extra cash. I've heard that Razor has some good mice as well, but I've never personally handled one myself.

I've been using the Razer for about two years now and I love it. You can get the Copperhead for about $49 at Amazon. It has the four side buttons which can be bound to whatever, plus it slides on their eXactMat like an air hockey puck. The DPI adjustment is on the fly, but I am pretty sure it requires the drivers (been a while since I installed it).

Hmm.
Do the logitech mouses have the 4 side buttons?

Nothing beats a G5.
I like heavy mice and the G5 is heavier than any other I've tried. It scrolls smooth, the dpi adjustment is intuitive and easy to use, the fire buttons don't wear out and the pads are nice and slippy without making it feel unstable.
Oh and all this is without installing some useless app for key management.

Yeah, that was the only downside to my Razer; the weight. It was a little to light. I opened it up and threw some lead weights in it, and it's perfect. At the time I couldn't find a left handed gaming mouse since that's how I play, they were all molded for righty's. This was ambidextrous, which was a plus.

Gaming mouse <> mouse on the game.
Sorry.

Gaming mouse?
Oh. I thought you said "Gamey mouse."
Uhh... never mind.

Nothing beats a G5? Mine is getting straight sketchy after two years. Does Logitech give a lifetime warranty?

Quit giving it flak?
Seriously though they do have a warranty... it may be two years... can't recall.
Anyhow one mouse per two years would be good going for me. That and I think the mouse is a decent price considering the hideous proces you can pay for some of the abortions on the market.

What is it about the G5 that's so great?

Two reasons I can think of:
* 400, 800, 2000 dpi on the fly
* adjustable weight cartridges
Murkow, how do you predominantly grip your mouse: Palm or Claw? Palming is well, cupping the mouse whereas Clawing is using your finger tips to move the mouse. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=njYWfcnq3pQ) The bigger the mouse, the likely hood of palming increases significantly; vice versa. I used to claw on my smaller logitech mouse, so your mileage may vary in regards to adjusting to a newer style.

The importance of that is pretty debatable. That's why I'd go for the cheaper 518, which is probably the same mouse without the weights and adjustment.

I'm with you on the 518, have one myself. I was just listing some features the 518 didn't have compared to the G5. Ymmv, I suppose.

I've got an MX518, great mouse, and it's what I use all the time.
The only thing I've used that was better is some of ther Razer products, but they're more expensive than it's worth for a mouse.

I claw.
I claw.
I'd say you best bet at this juncture is to go try out some mouses 'hands on' at futureshop and procure the one you like from ncix.com (I think it's the newegg.com of Canada if I remember).

Whoa!!!
Hang on a second... not important???
Sniping... hello... smooth arcs...
Personally I hunted down a G5 for the dpi adjustment and the weights alone. The whole thing with the cable is a major improvement too. I've tried wireless, no good, and normal USB cables snag and develop a spring like quality that the G5 wire just doesn't do.
As for the weights, I've found it possible to match, exactly, the balance of the mouse to certain tasks. Whether you want the front to be able to twitch and keep the back stable or vice versa, though I must admit that I ended up with all of the heavy weights in there to reduce down on the "shiver" when aiming.
Great mouse and not that expensive compared to some of those wireless gadgets.
Oh and as for DPI, 400 for sniping, 800 for assault and 2000 for vehicles (esp tanks). It's easy to use and prooves invaluable if, like me, you tend to vary your roles (oh and I'm usually on Battlefield 2142 in case you were wondering what game I was on about).

I need a mouse for MMOs, not FPS.

Heh, I like the high DPI setting, once you get used to it, you can use it for anything...
Maybe you'll see my on 2142 sometime, I'm starting to get into it, after a very long time of playing BF2. (BF2's still a better game in my opinion)

My G5 was screwing up, from what I read on the Tubes it was most likely the cable connection, and it was out of warranty. I just bought a 518 today, and I actually prefer the weight and tracking. I put my money where my mouth is.

Just as an aside, has anyone thought to try out the Belkin N52TE Nostromo (http://catalog.belkin.com/IWCatProductPage.process?Product_Id=390404)?

No, but I totally would, if I worked at Belkin, and my boss said "Test the new Nostromo today."

I've tried a couple of these devices and since the Saitek Game Commander I've not found one that works as well (that one broke years ago). Personally I'd love a thumbstick to control movement in FPS games. What really throws me though is people use these things and still use the keys to do WASD controls
I'd buy one of these except I'm fed up with the current crop not working right... that last one the d-pad was totally not acceptible for movement. It was only 4 way!! I'm hoping this one would work but I'm not convinced.

I've never wanted anything other than a mouse to play FPS games. If I'm at a friends house and "have" to play one with a controller, I start yanking my hair out, it's horrible.

< Is trained in both PC and console.
Nope. No such problem here. :D
In fact I can do the Indian attack only on a console. It doesn't work as well on a PC due to the mouse leading to over correction.
The Indian attack being basically to circle your target whilst keeping your gun trained on them. AI seems very weak against this kind of tactic.

We call that circle-strafing, and we (mousers) invented it circa 1996.
Note: I use invert mouse, since I was used to space/flight sims when I started playing Quake.

You n00b... everyone knows that when it's inverted it's called a trackerball.

Btw, strafing is the problem I found. A mouse is good for a smooth predictable curve but the fine control is reduced because the mouse can twist in your hand. Ergo circular strafing is more an autofire job where as with a controller you can hit them with every shot using semi auto. Mind you it doesn't help that there's no analogue control for movement, hence my search for a decent left hand device.
