View Full Version : The tea thread
For all those who love a perfect cuppa.
What's your favorite kind(s)?
I haven't met a tea that I don't like; black, white, green, red, herbal, I like them all. I have sooooo many different kinds. I love to try new ones, and I even buy books on tea. Not sure why I have this obsession but I do.
I was inspired to write this thread because I am sitting here drinking black chai tea and I haven't had that in so long, I forgot how delightfully spicy it is.
PS - For all you Brits, yes, I put the milk in first, then water. ;)

oo! oo! great thread :D :D
Currently drinking Keemun black tea - looseleaf from the Baltimore Coffee & Tea Co. (http://www.baltcoffee.com/catalog/)
Big fan of their loosleaf teas. It's a local establishment but they do mail-order too.
Also like their-
Apple Cinnamon & Vanilla (flavored black tea)
Red Bush Blood Orange (blood orange-flavored rooibos)
Egyptian Chamomile (haven't had it in a while, funny seeing a tin full of small dried flowers)
Black Currant (flavored black tea)
Earl Grey Green (haven't tried earl grey black yet, but I dig earl grey twinings)
Orange Mango (flavored black tea)
Pai Mu Tan (chinese white tea)
Chai Bengali (black chai tea)
For the US Twinings teabags I dig earl grey and lapsang souchong once in a while (lapsang souchong is great from the Balt. Coffee & Tea Co. but 4oz is way too much--that's something you can stand to drink *once in a while*)
I have some black chai tea in teabag form at home, think it's from "nature's promise." It's alright.
I've tried Jiaogulan (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jiaogulan) tea before, that stuff actually has medicinal properties from what I've read (vaguely similar to ginseng in chemical makeup but different). I felt really fucking good after drinking it, I know that much. Very calm and "centered" for lack of a better word. I got it from here (http://www.aumtea.com/)

I am drinking some homemade chai tea. It has small chunks of ginger and whole spices floating at the bottom of the tea and that is what's making it taste spicy.

Ah yeah, there's always the infamous "chai latte" you find at most coffeehouses; my favorite has been Pacific Chai (http://www.pacificchai.com/). I've bought the powder for home-use before but it's just not the same without the steamed milk and I don't have a machine to make that.

Green tea with burnt rice.
Mmmm.
I like that too, I think it's called gen ma chai. Good hearty green tea. It takes a few cups to get used to the rice, if you've never had it before.
Amongst the bad and mediocre teas I have right now, I have some good teas (coincidentally, all loose, but I'm not against a good bag):
- Some jasmine green tea mom gave me -- Very nice tea, but unfortunately I don't know the brand
- Oolong Black Dragon -- good flavor
- Earl Grey -- not the best Earl Grey I've had, but it's good
- Jasmine Pearls -- very fun and good flavor
- Yerba Mate -- bought from a local vendor
- Rooibos with dried flowers in it -- Good stuff but a little too flowery to drink every day
And although I'm out right now, it's hard to beat a good cup of Stash English Breakfast Tea. :coffee:
Yogi is also a fine brand. I enjoy their Kombucha green tea.
I don't usually drink them with milk, cream, sugar, honey, etc. Just black (or green :)).
Hmm, I think I'll make a cup now. :coffee:

Yerba - oy, that's some pretty bitter, intense stuff. That'll wake you up really fast!! (I'm thinking it must grow on you. I love strong bitter black tea, but the first time I tried yerba, it was akin to eating a lemon -- my taste buds were protesting)
I like some green tea blends
I mostly drink black tea though. For grocery store brands, favorites are Tazo 'Awake', and a brand called Taylors of /(and?) Harrowgate. Assam is usually what I get, although I enjoy Darjeeling as well. They also had a 'Scottish Breakfast Tea' that I loved, although it's not stocked at the grocery store anymore.
Earl Grey is nice on occasion.
There are also a couple of small tea companies (one called 'Teavana', another called 'Teasource') that I've gotten loose tea from.

Ahh yes Assam -- that's one I forgot to put in my list above. The looseleaf Assam from the balt. coffee & tea co. is fantastic.
Darjeeling is tasty if you're into floral/aromatic teas. It was a bit much for me but I see why they call it the "champagne" of teas.
One of my favorites is a loose leaf black tea I have with rose petals. When you drink it, it has a common black tea taste, except it smells like roses. With every sip, it's like smelling a bouquet of fragrant roses. Mmmmmm so nice. :)

I like tea and I like this thread. :)
I like Arctic Fire tea - couldn't remember what was in it, so it's apparently a china black tea with a hint of mint and blue cornflowers. It's really pretty to look at as well!
Other highly enjoyable teas:
- apple tea
- Oolong tea such as pu erh and tieh kuan yin ("Iron Buddha")
- Japanese green tea
- green teas in general
Oh, and Earl Grey tea is lovely!
And I'm at that stage where the word 'tea' is looking really strange to my eyes..

I find that it varies with me. But I usually like to stick with one blend for a certain time (at least half a year) and then change to a new one.
At the moment, I prefer Earl Grey to any other tea. Especially since I found out that it helps my metabolism and also helps when I'm in a bad mood. Earl Grey is my crack! :D
Last year, I went for vanilla flavoured green tea. And the year before it was some fruit tea blend. Let's see what's next.

I go through phases. My current addiction is Lady Grey (a milder version of Earl Grey). I also really like white tea, green tea, English Breakfast, Prince of Wales, Dilmah black, black tea flavoured with vanilla and a chamomile blend. I also like Fujian tea (can't remember it's actual name) because it reminds me of meditation classes when I was at college.
I drink all tea with milk, no sugar. The only exceptions are peppermint tea (I've tried it with milk and it really doesn't work) and lemon/ginger and fruit teas (the milk curdles and yes I have tried it).

Yerba Mate has a strange flavor, but I don't think it's bitter. Tazo makes some pretty good teas -- I like their Chai. Darjeeling is good stuff. I might buy some next time I buy tea.

My favorite teas:
Leaf-brewed Darjeeling, occasionally with a drop of lemon. If you're ever in West Bengal, try to get some Darjeeling tea straight from the gardens... they're unmixed and make you rethink your conception of what tea is.... Assam teas are also nice.
Earl Grey blends (various Indian black teas) are alright... get boring after a while...
Dhaabaa (roadside food-stands or mini-restaurants) chai... the kind you get on the streets in India, where they have a huge vat of boiling milk with tea-leaf dross caking the bottom and sides, re-boiling and re-boiling, throwing in a couple of teaspoons of sugar occasionally... it comes out like a dream.... no 'chai tea' in the world can match a road-side Indian chai. Add ginger and a little masala if desired.
[Just wanted to point out something: "chai tea" is redundant... that's saying 'tea tea'.]
Leaf-brewed green tea.
A great tea-bag variety is Wagh-Bakri (Tiger & Goat)... masala chai... for when I don't feel like brewing...
Lipton is balls.
Some of the herbal teas are nice once in a while... but the flavorings can be grating.
It's kinda funny how, just when coffee overtakes tea as Britain's favourite beverage, Americans get interested in tea!
hahaha true! However, coffee is still the favorite in America. I don't drink coffee at all though. You can have mine. ;)

Ahh, thanks for the correction. Good to know. Also, I don't mind Lipton for some reason, although it's not my first, second or third choice. But then again I mostly only have it when I go to Denny's, McDonald's or IHOP.

Assam black tea makes one heavenly concoction with honey & milk. I've brewed a pot of looseleaf Assam (fresh, bought the tin on friday) around 1-1.5x strength and added 3 tsp honey & some 2% organic milk to each cup (using a big oatmeal cup here, so it's a little bigger than 8oz)
The tea's malty overtones mix well with the milk, making it taste similar to a malt milkshake.
*Picks up cup and daintily crooks little finger*

Perhaps, Hmm, because I grew up on the prairie we didn't have much of a selection then so tasting various teas would have been an exotic treat. Growing up around lotsa corn and beans growing, the idea of taking a fresh plant and drying it (or not) then drinking it would have been fairly strange.
So I went out into the wide world thinking that all tea was dark brown crinkly stuff in little packages. And you saved the little bags to wring the last possible use out of them. I know, I know. Raised by parents who had gone through the depression. . .
And everyone where I grew up drank coffee. Even small children. Tea was for when you were sick. Hee. A very homogenous set-in-their-way society.

After enjoying some Assam black tea (the malty, broken orange pekoe looseleaf kind) I've had a renewed obsession with reading about tea.
So I decided to geek out a bit and post some wiki links-
Health benefits - Potential effects of tea on health - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Health_benefits_of_tea)
I found this interesting:
Boosts mental alertness
The amino acid L-theanine, found almost exclusively in the tea plant, actively alters the attention networks of the brain, according to results of human trials announced in September 2007. John Foxe, Ph.D., professor of neuroscience, biology and psychology at City College of the City University of New York, found that theanine is absorbed by the small intestine and crosses the blood-brain barrier, where it affects the brain's neurotransmitters and increases alpha brain-wave activity. The result is a calmer, yet more alert, state of mind.[21][22]
That sounds about right to me. A coworker has this weird synthetic "antioxidant drink" stuff he drinks twice a day which contains caffeine along with some other junk. One day I tried a cup of it, and I was impressed by the surge of energy I got from it, but not impressed at all with how jittery I felt. It was more like overdosing on Jolt. Drinking a pot of black tea, on the other hand, wakes me up but keeps me in a slightly subdued state of mind, exactly as that quoted section suggests. It's an active but slightly more-introverted state of mind. This does NOT work well with sleep deprivation, however--I just get more dazed/sleepy instead.
One of the drawbacks, however, includes the effects of tannin on the diet. I read (here (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tannin#Nutrition)) that the tannins can reduce your ability to absorb iron and other minerals from plant food, and as a result it's recommended to drink tea *between* meals rather than with. Or use a tea low in tannin, such as white tea or some herbals.

Well, it has a different flavor than tea, kind of earthy... very "warm" flavor, I guess, almost like you're drinking leaves from an oak tree.
A lot of people drink it because it gives you energy, but it's not like a caffeine buzz from drinking too much coffee, it's more clear-headed.
"Teeth staining?" Puleeze. Don't even get me started.

There was a very light-tasting tea I've had recently at a friends called Silverneedle, I think it was a white tea sort. Very very subtle flavor, but if your tastebuds were clear of anything harsh you could taste it and enjoy it. Apple Pomegranate was also very good, but surprisingly bitter.
We also are the proud owners of a Teavana here in the mall close to my house. Ive been a few and liked what I saw, though I suppose I will be more advent about it when I actually get to settle into my house. I do have a small contraption from there where you can brew tea and set it on a cup and itll drain into your mug.

Lapsang Souchong- smoked tea which tastes like drinking a campfire
jasmine tea- loved the stuff I got here, then my friend brought me back some from china- the type that comes in a ball and opens into a flower when it's steeping :holy:
Irish Breakfast- seems rounder and more flavorful than English Breakfast to me
Peppermint
In Brazil and Argentina I had Mate, served in the traditional style, where you pass around the glass with the bomba, or straw with a filter on the end, and everyone drinks- it's a social beverage
Also in Brazil the first time, fresh lemongrass tea

Latest discovery: Hot vanilla tea with 2 or 3 dried pears dropped in for sweetness and a bit of milk.

I usually put some milk in my Earl Grey, if I'm home at home! :p

Naww, I'm talking about Georgia tea. That's where I'm from.

Ahh, I thought you meant iced tea. I'm not familiar with Georgia tea. Does it involve peaches?

No, you were thinking of the right thing. Sweet, iced tea. I just didn't want you to think I was talking about some specially spiced tea (due to it being from New Orleans and whatnot).

Oh no, I know that sweet iced tea is very southern. You can't go wrong with it. :D
Tonight I had a nice cup of Earl Gray in front of the fire, it was delicious! :)
